Music and Mental Health

Thanks to generous funding from The Margaret Clark Morgan Foundation, Summa Health is broadening awareness and treatment of mental health through the use of music therapy. The Music and Mental Health program integrates music, an effective yet underutilized tool, to promote recovery in behavioral health patients. In partnership with the Akron Symphony, professional musicians perform weekly at group therapy sessions to help engage patients and facilitate communication.

To kick off the program and highlight the power of music in enhancing mental health, renowned pianist and psychiatrist Richard M. Kogan, MD, clinical professor of psychiatry at Weill Cornell Medical Center, explored the role of music in healing and the influence of psychological factors on the creative output through a one-of-a-kind lecture and piano performance at Summa Health System -- Akron Campus on February 5. A public performance with the Akron Symphony took place on the following evening.
