Supporting fellow employees during times of need is a hallmark value embraced across Summa Health. One example of this generosity is demonstrated by the Summa Health Medical Staff whose collective giving in 2023 has assisted other employees in meaningful ways.
Dean M. Frate, M.D., Summa Health chief medical officer and president of Summa Health System Medical Staff, said that every year, the team of physicians sets aside funds to support different initiatives in the spirit of caring for and showing appreciation to employees at Summa Health.
“We are grateful for everyone’s diligent work,” said Dr. Frate. “In 2023, we chose to support SummaShares and Smart Start because of the significant impact of these programs on the lives of those we work with daily.”
SummaShares provides financial assistance to employees enduring hardships or emergencies. Whether they need help with rent or mortgages or paying for utilities and food, SummaShares is available to assist employees in crisis. The fund also pays for medical premiums on behalf of employees who need to take a leave of absence.
“The Medical Staff is proud to support this initiative that ultimately results in a more caring and compassionate workplace environment,” said Dr. Frate.
Summa Health Smart Start is a program that develops and strengthens employees by eliminating barriers to completing the education required for gainful employment as a healthcare professional. Partnerships with Aultman College, Stark State College and Herzing University enable employees to train for a future as an associate registered nurse, licensed practical nurse, medical assistant, respiratory therapist or surgical technician. After graduation, Summa Health works with each program participant on their future career goals while they fulfill a work commitment at Summa Health, creating a cycle of economic empowerment in the local economy.
